FF #3

This week's question:

Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

I'm not a big fan...I prefer books that blow my mind and are completely original... It's one thing if you have an idea that starts out to be similar to something else (say the theme of vampires - yes they all suck your blood....you can't really change that...) but I want to read something new/fresh/original... I want it to be something that I've never read before... make it your own... If a book ends up to be similar to another one that I've read, I get a little disappointed... you know those moments of deja vu where you're like "umm haven't I read this already?" - that's really annoying... Fanfic doesn't bother me very much - I think that's fun for fans to take on... but I don't really buy a lot of Fanfic... well... If I do, I don't realize it's fanfic at least...

What about you?! What do you think?

  1. I agree - I usually don't mind as long as there is some originality - something different, even if the books are a similar concept.

    1. Exactly. Something needs to be different. Otherwise, what was the point in rewriting another person's work and wasting my time as a reader. >_<

  2. I enjoy fairytale retellings. But I don't do the republished fanfiction.

    1. I don't know if I've really read any fairytale retellings? I'll have to check into that. LOL I know I've seen movies but not so sure I've read books classified as fairytale retellings... Hmmm If I did, I must not have realized it! haha :)

  4. I actually don't mind reading about similiar concepts etc. as long as there is still something original to it. :) And as for fanfiction.. Well, I love it, but it's fandom-only for me, so earning money from publishing fanfiction feels kinda wrong to me. ._.

    1. I don't read too much fan fiction - I do enjoy 50 Shades (which I know is one of those fan fics/series that you either love or you hate). I'm okay with publishing as long as you can't immediately tell it's fan fic? Like 50 Shades - there's NO WAY IN HADES that I would've connected that to Twilight hahaha I had no clue it was fan fic until AFTER I read it. Even then I thought it was a joke when I read it was a fan fic for Twilight. >_<
