Animal is quite the intriguing tale. I wasn't sure what to expect with this one because the cover doesn't give much away, nor does the synopsis. The novel starts out pretty slowly so I was a tad worried I wouldn't like this one as much as I liked this author's previous work. But before long, I couldn't put it down. The suspense in this novel is nearly overwhelming within certain moments.

You have your characters - the main female lead being Ava. She seemed drab to me at first but that was because she's so used to hiding and never letting herself be comfortable. She's always looking over her shoulder, fearing what goes bump in the night. She has horrible anxiety & panic attacks. I've had my share of those when I was a teen and the author captures the feeling quite well. She loves animals. Good ones. Ones that are furry or feathery. But she's learned about what really goes bump in the night from her parents. Part of me wonders what would've happened if her parents had never been killed... Or if she never knew about the vampires at all. Would she have gone blissfully into the arms of Michael in the beginning before her cousin swept her away into hiding? Hmm things to think about.

Anyways, then you have Michael. Dark, scary, warped, Michael... He's scary because he's so unstable. I never knew what he would do one moment from the next. I definitely wouldn't have been able to keep my wits about me like Ava does had I been stuck with him. Evan... I loved Evan's character. He was a great balance between the sane and the crazy psycho.

The other supporting characters were great & I would even be up for another story featuring them again.

The plot keeps you on your toes. You think Ava is getting stuck into Stockholm's syndrome, beginning to really have feelings for Michael... but it's all a part of her plan. Keep your enemies close. She does it wayyyy better and more dedicated than I ever could. Bravo to her.

As the reader, you want her to do something and take action against Michael, save herself, but she does the exact opposite of what you really expected her to do. Loved that. It kept me on my toes as the reader.

The climax... which one? It felt like there were moments that left you so high strung that you thought they were the climax, leaving you no where to go but down... But then it keeps going! I really enjoyed the way the story built and built.

Overall, great novel once I became attached to & invested in the characters lives.

Huge 4 star novel for me. This novel was just another reason proving why I love everything this author has published. Nikki Rae has a way of spinning the plot into the exact opposite direction you expect it to go. She leaves you wanting more. She builds and builds onto the story until you think you can't handle anymore... then she throws something else at the characters, leaving you feeling sucker punched. You can't turn the pages fast enough.

“Okay. It’s settled. One date.” Lifting his palm, he pressed it against my cheek, holding it there. My skin tingled on contact, burning me in all sorts of ways. “But I think we need to try something out beforehand just to make sure that we know what we’re getting ourselves into.” “Um, what?” I stiffened, panicking at the possibilities of what he was saying. Sweat formed along the back of my neck, but I couldn’t move to wipe it away. Fuck. This wasn’t good. Without warning, he pressed his mouth against mine, taking my heart, body, entire soul by complete surprise. Ky captured me in all the ways a woman wanted to be captured by a man. And oh, what a damn delicious capture it was. I’d always wondered what it’d be like to kiss this boy. And it wasn’t because I saw him in that sort of light growing up either, just simple curiosity, to say the least But whatever preconceived notions I had about awkwardness and painful teeth clashing went out the window the moment his tongue pressed against my lips. Holy hell. Now this was a kiss. His fingers, strong and sure, tangled in my hair, releasing my ponytail with the flick of his thumb. Damn, he was good. My hair fell over my shoulders, shadowing my cheeks, as well as his. I scooted forward, pressing my hands onto the bareness of his neck, tracing the lines of his muscled skin on his shoulders like I’d wanted to do since I first got him in the room with me. I moaned, embarrassingly loud because yeah, this was beyond any kiss I’d ever experienced in the past. Slow, agonizing, and perfect. Ky made the act of kissing as sensual as having sex in a steamy shower. Not that I’d ever actually experienced hot, steamy shower sex or anything. But um, yeah, it was definitely on my bucket list.

Oh my goodness....  Where do I start?

First, I have to apologize for not getting my post up on time! >_< I'd give a thousand excuses such as the tornadoes we had to deal with, having to make a weekend trip to NOLA for my friend's wedding and forgetting my laptop at home >_< and then my internet not working but in the end, it's still on me. I'm not one to make a habit of missing posts and I definitely didn't want to miss this one. I adore Heather & didn't want to let her down. :( I'm sorry Heather & Between The Sheets!

Now, to the good stuff!

I adored this novel. I have really enjoyed everything that Heather has written thus far. The characters! Ahh! I adore Ky. He was absolutely fabulous. I wanted him in every scene. Callie - I loved her spunk BUT she did get on my nerves a handful of times. Her personality was a bit much here and there - especially when she would flip flop her emotions. Now Callie's sister... eh... She was a mess. I disliked her. But I think I was supposed to dislike her. LOL And then in the end, you hurt for her. And Callie's mom and dad... :( They broke my heart. I loved them and was annoyed with them all at the same time.

The plot - Loved! I really enjoyed where this story took me. Again... Ky... Sigh... Love him. The excerpt above... Yes... That. It was probably one of my favorite parts of the novel! LOVEDDDD it! I can't even begin to understand how Callie's family feels with the tragedy that they've lived through. It breaks my heart & Callie breaking down over her brother's room... gosh... that hurt my heart. HURTTTTT.

The ending... Oh gosh. I want more Ky & Callie after the ending.

At the end of this novel I wanted to turn around and go back to page one and go through it all over again.

Wicked
Wicked
Wicked Trilogy #1
by Jennifer Armentrout
NA PNR
Expected Publication Date: Dec 8, 2014

Synopsis:
Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans. Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart. Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her. But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

Review: 500 Days by Jessica Miller @JLMreadingrocks

500 Days
by Jessica Miller
NA Romance
Published April 14, 2014

*Ebook obtained directly from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Synopsis via Goodreads:

Casper Covington had his music, women, and pretty much anything he wanted at his disposal. But the one thing that plagued his thoughts constantly was the one thing he couldn't have. The girl he met six months ago. A drunken one night stand that he couldn't get out of his head. The only thing he remembered from that night was her green eyes and the ivy tattoo that stretched the length of her body. In his attempts to put an end to the tortuous dreams of the mysterious girl, Casper’s attention is caught by the new bartender. There’s just something so familiar about her that his need to get to know her becomes more troublesome than he expected.

Alexis Radcliff was raised by her four brothers making her as tough as nails on the outside but on the inside she wanted what every girl did – someone to love her, faults and all. She would be damned if she admitted that out loud and made a point to show she could use men just as easily as they used women. But when a sexy musician starts to show interest in Alex she has a hard time convincing herself to stay away. Alex knows everyone has secrets but hers are ones she doesn't want to share. But when she can no longer fight her feelings, her dark past slowly starts to unravel.

Can true love conquer all? Or are past ghosts a haunting premonition of what lies ahead?

I've enjoyed everything that Jessica Miller has written so I was excited to dig into this new story from her! It was definitely a goodie!

Okay, so the Alex has to be one of the most frustrating female lead characters I've read in quite some time. She's one of those characters who always seems to make the wrong, stubborn, stupid decision to us as the reader. Ha. Especially when it comes to making a decision about the yummy man she loves but won't admit to loving.

Which brings me back to Casper! Ah! Loved him. He is what brought balance to the novel for me. He had his head on straight & made me want to keep reading.

As frustrating as Alex was, Casper and Alex together, when she wasn't fighting to admit she loved him, were beautiful & hot together.

Great sex scenes, great angst, and the plot kept me going.

The last plot twist with her oldest brother... Oh gosh... I cried... Hard. Be prepared.

Overall, 4 stars for me!

Review! Locks: Rapunzel Unhinged by Sarah J. Pepper

Locks
by Sarah J. Pepper
New Adult Fairy Tale
Published July 1, 2014

*E-Arc obtained in exchange for an honest review*

Synopsis via Goodreads:

Gunned down by the hottest killer in the history of the Badass Archives wasn’t exactly Rapunzel’s end-game. But when her reputable extraction skills fail, she uses unorthodox methods to gain her freedom from the Mercenary, whose icy blue eyes have serious panty-dropping capabilities. Even though most girls wouldn’t fall for their would-be assassin, Rapunzel isn’t like most dames. Her major girl-boner for the Mercenary is so pathetically intense it verges on cliché.

Regardless, Rapunzel’s hands are tied. Love chooses its victims, not the other way around. She isn’t the stereotypical Damsel in Distress. Her Bad-Boy Prince Charming is a renowned mercenary, and her “Happy Ending” plays out like a bad movie. However, she is determined to find her freedom—love be damned—and she’ll do it in a fabulous pair of heels.

I specialize in dark, paranormal romance – think “happy ever after” but with a twisted, dark chocolate center. Real-life romance isn’t only filled with hugs, kisses, unicorns, and rainbows. True-love can be more thoroughly described in times of darkness and tribulation. It’s in those harsh moments where you see what a person is truly capable of – both the good and bad. Sometimes prince-charming isn’t always on time, and the glass slipper is a little snug. However, it doesn’t mean Charming is not Mr. Right, and who says every shoe is the perfect fit?

Who likes fairy tale retellings? You? What about you? Me... Well, I used to think that I wouldn't be able to get into a fairy tale retelling. I've read a few really good ones in the last few years but never thought "Ohhh, a fairy tale retelling! Let me pick that book up!" You know? When I heard Sarah Pepper was going to be writing a Rapunzel spin, I was so excited. I mean, c'mon, have you read her spin on Alice?!?! If you haven't, you MUST go get Death of the Mad Hatter! Loved that book.

Locks was an absolutely brilliant spin on the old fashion tale of Rapunzel! It was fresh, exciting, surprising, and so much fun!

The characters that Sarah created are one of a kind! Yes, even though they spin from the old Rapunzel tale, they're creative, fresh & seriously one of a kind. Rapunzel, AKA Zel - Ahh! That girl's attitude and spunk! Love her!

The plot for this tale took me in a completely unexpected direction. I never expected the directions that the story took. I loved that about this novel! I couldn't put it down and had so many laugh/snort moments, I can't count how many times my husband or whoever happened to be near me in public gave me the "wtf?" look... Ha.

The world building was incredible. Everything was so vivid and detailed just right! I was transported to another dimension! It was so awesome.

So overall...

Character Guest Post! :)

My name is Keaira. Angela has stepped back and told me I could talk about any topic on this post! Now, normally I would take this opportunity to talk about cars, but instead I thought I would share my bath muscle soak with you. I travel a lot and nothing gives you sore muscles like sitting on a plane for hours. I also have the ability to shift into a peregrine falcon and nothing is as hard on the human body as turning into an animal. My favorite thing is to come home to a hot bath and this muscle soak.

 What you’ll need:

 2 cups of Epsom Salts

1 cup of Sea Salt

½ cup of Baking Soda

15 to 20 drops of essential oil. There are several oils to pick from and you can use whatever scent you want.  Here is a tip: Relaxing scents – lavender, chamomile. Invigorating scents – peppermint, rosemary, lemon, coconut

Optional: dried flower pedals

All you have to do is mix all this ingredients together well and store them in a closed container in a cool dark place. Remember that the scent of the oils will start to diminish the longer you keep the soak. Add about ½ cup to 1 full cup for each bath and soak for at least 15-20 minutes.

My personal favorite oil to use is coconut. I love the way it smells but it is also really good for your skin and your hair. And I never forget the flower pedals.

Don’t forget to pick up your copy of Stolen Time. I need all the friends I can get. When you go around the county blackmailing shifters into jointing the General’s cause (that’s my boss) you don’t make many friends. Thank you for inviting me to drop in and I’d love to hear if you enjoyed your muscle soak bath!

Keaira jumped when her desk phone rang. Cursing, she picked up the phone.
     “Mr. Scott’s office.”
     “Hey, it’s Carson.”
Keaira felt her face light up.
“Oh. Hi. How did you get my work number?” Keaira shook her head at her own stupid question. “Ugh, I think I already knew the answer to that.”
“Sorry. I talked to my dad this morning. Just thought I’d warn you that he was asking questions about us.” He sounded a little unsure of himself.
“It’s not a big deal. So, what’s up?”
Keaira twirled her chair around to stare at the boring white wall behind her.
“I was just going to tell you I’d really like to see you again. How does tomorrow night sound?”
Keaira pushed her foot lightly against the floor to turn the chair the way around and rested her elbows on her desk. The deep sound of his voice made her feel a little light headed.
“I’m free.” Keaira caught herself before she giggled. I will not act like a giddy little school-girl over a guy, even Carson.
“Dinner and bowling with my friends all right with you?” He sounded nervous, not at all like the confident, easy-going Carson of the night before.
     “Sounds like fun.”
“Last time you shot down my idea, so I just wanted to make sure. I’ll pick you up after work.” Now he was back to the cocky Carson she had been with last night.
     “See ya then. Bye.”
Keaira turned back around to hang up, but the cord wouldn’t reach the cradle. She  untangled it from around the chair and freed the finger that was all wrapped up in the cord from twisting it while she was talking to Carson. Gah, I am acting like a school-girl. Who doesn’t use cordless phones these days anyways.
Keaira was so distracted she didn’t see Mr. Scott come into her office. She nearly fell out of her chair when she looked up. She could understand not hearing or seeing him enter, but surely she should have smelled his cologne when he came into the room. I hate that cologne.
He tried to smile. To Keaira it just looked like a sneer. She’d love to be the one who wiped it from his face one day.
He said, “Sorry, did I interrupt something?”
She narrowed her eyes at him. He knew damn well she had just been on the phone with Carson.
     “Not interrupting, no.”
He set a handful of papers on her desk. “New membership information.”
Keaira took the papers and started looking through them. Despite her obvious attempt to ignore him, the General didn’t leave. She avoided his gaze as she started transferring bank accounts and phone numbers to the computer. He pulled up a chair to the front of the desk.
“So how are things going with Carson?”
He unbuttoned his navy-blue suit jacket as he sat down, exposing the crisp white dress shirt underneath.
     Keaira didn’t look at him.
“Considering you are my boss and he is your son, there are two strikes against you. I guess the fact that you hold my life in your hands is the third reason why I will not talk to you about anything having to do with me and Carson.”
The General chuckled. “I knew I could trust you to keep secrets.”
Keaira tried not to let him affect her, but the tremor, which ran up her spine, couldn’t be stopped. Her fingers clenched into fists, and she figured that while he was in a good mood she would broach the subject that had been nagging at her all day.
“Speaking of secrets, why are you keeping your, um, plans from your family?”
She held her breath, hoping she would not regret acting on her curiosity. She peered at him out of the corner of her eye.
The General sighed and looked at her oddly. Funny, he thinks he can trust me. Keaira inwardly laughed. She met his brown eyes as he stared at her. A minute passed with neither of them moving. He finally leaned back in his chair and closed the door. Keaira relaxed a bit, allowing herself to breathe.
“I don’t want to put them in harm’s way any more than I already have. Those who deny the rise of the higher class may try to get information out of them.”
He spoke quickly. Keaira had the feeling he wasn’t telling her the whole reason.
Not being the best at holding her tongue, Keaira whispered, “You don’t want them to try to stop you.”
The General suddenly stood and then returned the chair to its place in the corner. He turned back toward Keaira, and she slumped into her chair as his brown eyes bore into hers.
“I love my family. I will not let anything hurt them.” He gave her one last hard glance as he opened the office door and left.
Keaira sat there, mouth wide open and watched him leave.
She believed the General loved his family but on selfish terms. This man was insane, and he held her life and the lives of many others in his hands. If it were not for the collateral the General had over Keaira, she would want nothing to do with his scheme to rule over the humans. She swallowed the lump in her throat as she reminded herself he had the ability to take any life he wanted. She wasn’t the only one in danger. Right now she was just thankful her big mouth didn’t get her into even bigger trouble.
