Synopsis via Goodreads:

How do you live with a secret so dark and so deeply woven into your being that it threatens to smother your very existence, with no known way out? Use it to your advantage.

Kailey Rooke, karmelean, and now a possibly unethical karma-for-hire, has spent the past year jumping from project to project without any real hope for salvation. With repercussions from her actions at every turn, she discovers that as time goes on, she loses a bit more of herself to that which feeds on her anguish--that which is thriving inside her own body.

When a new contract to find a missing girl arises, Kailey attempts to put her past and its associated problems on the back burner, but she soon finds out that treachery and deceit lie shortly ahead in Golden Dunes, only giving face to new problems, with one leading right back to her childhood past.

She struggles to complete her contract as her own life teeters on a fulcrum, constantly tipping according to karma’s whim. How long will she keep her balance? Which way will she fall?

Was born in Chicago and slept in a dresser drawer for the first few weeks of my life, marking me as a future claustrophobe.

I studied at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana (man I grew up quick), where I became a number, but decided it was a good number.

I write with plenty of snacks in hand, making sure they are not in multiples of three. That number makes me nervous.

I love food. I do.

I also love tea. Very much. Maybe even more than food. But I’ll get to that later… Let me tell you a story, first…

There was a dark time in my life, years ago, when some really crappy things happened—things that darkened my world. I had suffered through a horrible sexual assault by a stranger, and my parents—my major support in my life—were both very, very ill. The assault was hard on everyone. I struggled to perform as my usual self, but I knew I was different now. I was holding back, something I never ever did. And I found joy in nothing. I was not the same daughter they had watched grow up for the last twenty five years.

My mother sensed my constant pain despite my façade of NORMAL. Having been through her own horrible experiences, she knew what swelled in my belly, and knew it was best to share the thoughts and tears. The worst thing to do was to bottle it up and let it brew in its own filth. Open arms and open ears were the best remedy.

I couldn’t even begin to clock the hours spent talking over cups of hot tea with my dear mother about any and everything under the sun. The sheer act of letting myself bleed out the bad through words spoken was a therapy so good for my soul that I began sharing my experiences with others. I talked about it ALL. Every. Tiny. Painful. Detail. Then, something strange happened. I began feeling like me again. That girl that loved taking long walks by herself and loved sharing smiles with strangers was back. That girl that loved food, and loved the preparation involved in making meals chock full of love was back. I WAS BACK.

With my return, my mother encouraged me to do the things that made me happy inside, but she also stressed the importance of expressing myself. So one day I began writing down all the things that were still lingering inside me causing strife here and there. I planned on crumbling up this paper and throwing it away, but I knew that the troubles would always loiter, even after the paper made its trip to the incinerator. Well somehow, those notes then turned into a short story, and eventually, that short story morphed into an epic tale of a woman and her ill mother on a magical quest. And there was lots of food and tea involved!

My mother was able to read half of my novel before she passed away and the joy in her eyes reading it is what will fill my soul with happiness for eternity. Renhala is a gift of words that touches the senses. My heroine, Kailey, is a tea-loving woman with an appreciation for good food and an even greater appreciation for family.

Besides sharing my story (Renhala is currently free!) I also wanted to give you all one more gift: a recipe of my mother’s for Steak Diane—a food that made its way into my mouth and into my novel.
Thank you all for reading and I’d love to hear from you about what foods make you happiest!

STEAK DIANE:

4 strip steaks (1/2 lb), cut ½ in thick
Salt & pepper
Mustard
¼ C butter
3 T lemon juice
2 tsp minced fresh chives
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Pound steaks thin (about ¼ in thick), sprinkle each with S&P. Rub mustard on both sides of steaks.
Melt butter in large skillet over med-high heat. Fry 2 steaks for 2 min on each side, transfer to hot serving plate. Repeat with remaining steaks.

Add lemon juice, chives, and Worcestershire to skillet and bring to boil.

Return steaks to the pan to heat through and coat with sauce. Pour remaining sauce over steaks on plate.

Enjoy a cup of earl grey tea afterwards!

If you missed my review of book 1, go HERE and you'll find it :)
My review of Golden Dunes went live back in December but here it is again in case you missed it.

Wow... I mean wow...  The world building is just out of this world... literally. I love the world that the author builds for this series. The Golden Dunes... I mean, I felt like I was sweating and wiping sand away from my skin while I was reading. Love, love, love that about this series. Everything is so vivid but not the point where it's over-described. There's plenty of room for you to add to it in your mind while you're reading.

The characters - They're great. I loved seeing the "problem" side of Kailey come out so much in this novel. I have to admit, her talents still are hard for me to imagine in my mind but I just have to go with it because it's awesome. Her "feeler" - I have a hard time picturing that when she's constantly sending her feeler out. Ooh and the men... I love Ladimer... You honestly don't seem to see Connor much. Or maybe it was because I couldn't wait until Ladimer graced the pages again so I wasn't paying attention to Connor.... LOL I didn't focus very much on the romantic aspect between Kailey, Connor & Ladimer in this novel. I was more focused on the events unfolding in the novel. It was spectacular.

I really enjoyed the new characters and the investigation that they were trying to work though. There were a few flips in the plot that I didn't quite follow (one person whom I thought dead was not and the other sibling was...) but I'm thinking that I may have just been too sleepy to keep up. Ha. I loved seeing all of the original characters being pulled over into book 2 as well. Great, great characters!

Overall, great continuation to series. I think I may have liked this one a little bit more because it was just...awesome. Bu! Love him!!! I just want to get a nose plug and give him a big hug!

As an unexpected warmth flows into the room, running over my feet first, I freeze. It slowly crawls up my body, touching my hands and forcing them to reach forward. As the heat envelopes my head, I suddenly yearn to possess this deadly treasure, so I touch it, and the pole comes off the wall with one pull. I embrace it, suddenly feeling I will never be disconnected from my new lover, because it is me and I am it. I swing, and it is light in my hands. The metal whistles as it slices air, singing its song of perfection—perfect balance.
Suddenly, I am torn from my find by a peculiar noise accompanied by the faint smell of rotten eggs. I know the smell, and I run to the door, not wanting to be cornered in this room. That’s when I see it standing in the road, and it’s huge—at least eight feet tall and five feet wide, with dark brown skin and fur. I recognize the feet—all three of them, situated like a tripod, with the center leg slightly forward. Its full hideousness is far worse than its feet alone. The huge eyes that take up at least 50 percent of its head stare at me while its mouth, which seems to take up the other 50, quivers, drooling some dark liquid. I can’t be sure, but it looks like it’s hungry. It stares at me as though I’m a huge medium rare rib-eye steak. There are sprouts of fur here and there around its body, and its arms dangle below its waist. It wears a large loincloth and short pants, both shredded on the edges. There is also a band around its waist, somewhat resembling an extra, extra, extra large fanny pack. I stand, frozen with fear at the realization that I’ve been visited by yet another hideous creature. It was not a dream. The delicious meal I just ate starts creeping up my throat, but I swallow, keeping it at bay.
A noise escapes from behind the creature. Its ears quiver, and its head turns all the way around like an owl’s, then swivels back toward me. I’m amazed by its flexibility. Its skin seems to be in constant movement, and it begins moving toward me quickly. It’s so fast. And so big.
I grab the pole and stabilize myself, knowing I cannot outrun this abomination, and it’s time to prove I can take care of myself. Seconds before it reaches to grab me with its monkey-length arms, I duck and swing the pole out, but the creature jumps over me swiftly.
It lunges again quicker than expected, and I manage to somehow cut my leg with my own weapon. The flow of blood freezes me, vulnerability creeping up on me like a dark shadow. The creature makes the jump toward me. I fall directly down, sticking my pole spade straight up in its direction with my eyes closed. My movement is unexpected—by both of us—so the creature comes down slightly crooked as my blade nicks the inside of its leg.
Black ooze runs down its leg, dripping onto the dirt. Black ooze. Before I lose myself to the visions, I notice the tears in its eyes. This big, ugly creature—surely sent by Satan himself—is crying, and reeks of regret?
“Ow! You hurt Bu! How could you? Bu was only going to help you.” Its voice is undeniably male and youthful as it wipes the dark ooze from its mouth on the back of his hand, then proceeds to lick some off.
“Oh, gross,” I say, totally disgusted. I hold the pole weapon out in front of me.
The tears are as big as his eyes as they roll down his cheeks, and I find myself feeling bad I hurt him, even if he was going to rip my throat out. I get closer to him, just out of arm’s length, and say, “You were going to eat me! Is this a trick? You feign pain, I come close, and then you eat me?”
He then does something unexpected—giggles. It’s then that I feel it—purity. Purity of heart and soul is spewing from him, like rays from a sun, warm and soft as cashmere.
“Wait,” I say as I sniff the air. “You smell like chocolate.”

Wow. I absolutely adored The Scent of a Soul!!!!

It's long. Really Long. Or maybe it just seems that way because the plot is nearly like 3 books in one. I LOVEEEEED it! I didn't want to put it down! Reading into the early morning hours this weekend, I didn't want it to end but I couldn't wait to see how it ended! Now, I'm left wanting more & I can't wait to read Candice & Flynn's story!

The characters are great! I adored Marek & Lilliah! Marek - HOT, Scottish, rich, ohh...well, 300+ years old... LOL Did I say Hot? Then there's Patrick, Sam, Flynn, Candice! Even Jack was a likable guy - Plus the multitude of characters that you hardly get to know but love all the same because of the sacrifices that they make throughout the novel!

So, in the beginning, you see Lilliah move to a really poor neighborhood - pretty much the slums - that's super dangerous for a woman to be alone. Marek rescues her over and over again from people in the neighborhood! Finally, you find out why she's moved into the slums and alone, escaping her normal life and family back home - her jerk of an X. Total JERK. He reminded me of Lilliah's jerk of a brother. Ugh. When she meets Marek, you can't help but wonder why in the world a rich guy is living in the slums... driving around in a Lexus...wearing nice clothes. There's mystery all around him and his friends. How the heck does he keep magically appearing when she's in trouble?

And then BAM - She's thrown into the middle of a war between brothers. You have to give it to him - Marek's brother is a freaking nut job and total bad guy. He wants Lilliah just like he wanted Marek's previous love.

Honestly, okay, I thought he was going to be a shifter like a were. I did NOT expect that he would be a vampire. I hope that's not a spoiler? Surely that's not a spoiler, right? I guess the word has to be out that this is a vampire novel so it can reach the right audience.

Anyways, the ups and downs that occur throughout the novel made me feel like I had read a book 1, book 2, and book 3 of a series! I loved that it was all put together into one novel!

I loved the twists and turns in the plot. The action and emotions (both good and bad) were constantly moving. I never once became bored.

I loved this novel!

So, next is Candice and Flynn. I want to see more of Patrick too! LOL

My Review:

Holy smokes!! I <3 JLA! I love the world that she built with the Lux Series. Now seeing it come to life in an adult setting.... ER-MA-GAWD! It is HOT...and SPECTACULAR...AMAZING.... Should I keep going or do you get the point here? LoL

I adore the fact that JLA is now shedding light on the Arum - the characters in the Lux Series that we think of as some of the "bad" guys. We end up LOVING what Hunter is and what he can do. Yes, he's actually one of the guys that goes out and KILLS the Lux that we've all grown to love. Now we see that there is another side to him just as there are the Lux. We see the Lux as the bad guys in this novel and Hunter is killing them to defend Serena. Seriously opposite world from the YA Lux series.

Serena happens to be the one with a huge target on her back. Hunter is assigned to keep her safe until her fate is decided. Of course, he's not happy about this little predicament but Serena eventually grows on him.

Good grief is that man/alien/whatever you want to call him hot...Totally HOT!

The action in this novel (in the bedroom and not in the bedroom LOL) is amazing. I was gripping my poor ipad so hard I'm surprised the screen didn't crack.

Ooooh and when she throws bits & pieces of The Lux series into the mix!!! Squeee! I wanted to reach out and hug Daemon when we see him momentarily. I'm so glad that Luc plays a role too!

Anyways, I could go on and on and on and on. This novel was FABULOUS!!!
Overall, this entire novel is AMAZING & I can't wait to see what's next!!! Seriously, if you like the Lux Series and you're into more "adult" content & characters, GET THIS NOVEL. You won't be disappointed. ^_^

Overall Rating: 5 Huge Stars
Cover Rating: 5 Stars (YUMMMM)

My Review:
If you missed my review of The Last Witch (bk 1) go HERE and check it out.
This review will be saying a lot of the same things because, well, this series is AH-Mazing! Several of the things I discussed in that review were proven yet again to be true when I read The Underground Witch!

I LOVED The Last Witch - completely fell in love with Emmeline and Erick. The Underground Witch reinforced that love. I didn't realize it was even possible for me to love them any more than I already did... but I was so wrong! I love them so much more now. Through the emotional ups and downs, I wanted to hug them, cry, pat them on the back, yell at them! Everything!

Emmeline is truly an amazingly well-written character. If I could honestly jump into a book and become a character, I would love to be her! (Yes, I want her eyes but having Erick too - Totally Great Idea! Ha).

I adored the new characters that we were introduced to as well - O'fin & Emmeline's grandmother! <3 I adore them! Then, of course, we have the introduction of the new bad guys. They kept me on my toes almost as if I was having to look over my own shoulder a time or two.

Erick - swoon - is the perfect Prince Charming. I just adore his character. I have to admit I wanted to smack him then turn around and hug him a few times in this novel. We (as the reader) know what's going on and he doesn't. So, of course, we want him to push, fight, and just GO, MOVE, NOW... but, duh, he doesn't because he doesn't KNOW what's going on at the time. I was biting my nails and flipping the pages as fast as I possibly could!

The movement of the plot is spectacular. There's not a single dull moment (and that goes for bk 1 AND bk 2).

I can't really say this any other way, so I'm just going to have to quote this statement from my review of The Last Witch:
"The writing style that Debbie Dee brings to this novel was so precise that my eyes simply flowed across the pages without any effort. For someone like me who reads at least 3 books a week, this is quite an accomplishment. I've seen writing of every style and Debbie Dee's is one of the most comfortable yet poised style I've come across."

If you haven't noticed, I could go on and on about this series. It's one of my faves! Eeek!! I can't wait to see what happens next!!!!!

So, again, let me tell you that this series has it all - Good girls, great guys, amazing plot sequence, great action, a lot of emotion, great bad guys, romance that makes you swoon... I mean, seriously, I could keep going if you want me to?

Umm... yea... I still want Emmeline's eyes!! LOL Can someone please create contacts like that? I would greatly appreciate it - 'Kay - Thanks! :)

About the Author:

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn't do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life. So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase. Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodgeball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head. Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what lap top out the window. She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone and hit #4 on her speed dial.

"Hello."
"Boss, is that you?"
"Why yes, A. M., who else would be answering my phone?"
"Er... right. Well, I'm calling to let you know you can pick up my luxury Ford Focus at Starbucks near the interstate."
"Why ever would I want to do that?"
"Because I quit you idiot!"

A.M. hit the end button and speed dialed her husband.

"Hi hubs, can you pick me up at Starbucks?"
"Sure... Having some car trouble?"
"Not at all. I don't have a car to have trouble with because I just quit my job."
"WHAT?!"
"It's time for a new career and I am going to be a very famous novelist."

So began A. M. Hargrove's career as a young adult paranormal romance author of self-published ebooks. Her series, The Guardians of Vesturon, centers around a family of six siblings and is a mix of humor, mystery, suspense and of course, love. Survival is her first book in the series and her second, Resurrection will be released in January.
If you're wondering, it didn't happen EXACTLY that way, but....

My Review:

I hadn't been introduced to A.M. Hargrove's work until I was given the opportunity to join this tour for Kissing Fire. I'm soooo glad that I jumped on board. I can't wait to pick up the first 2 novels in this series.

Okay, with that out of the way, let me go straight into Kissing Fire.

Now, since I hadn't read anything else in this series, I wasn't sure what I had missed. Do not let the fact that this novel is technically the third in a series bother you. Yes, I'm completely OCD when it comes to reading series in order. However, I didn't even realize this was part of a series until I was halfway through it! Hargrove gives an amazing account of what I missed to the point where I didn't NEED to read the others in the series. However, I WANT to read them now. Ha.

The characters are very easy to become attached to. Preston, this hot, sexy, undercover DEA Agent was an amazing character to follow. He's given up more than I care to discuss for his job putting drug lords where they belong. They've taken so much from him, including his father and being forced to put his sister & mom in hiding under constant protection. When you learn about Preston's journey to get where he is (going to jail and serving time... plus everything that went along with that...), you begin to see how amazingly strong and brave this man really is. The things that Preston endured shows that he's such a selfless man. Oh, god, I hated hearing about what happened to him but it made me love him even more.

Avery is a doll. I loved her & her crazy sumo-wrestling friend. Ha. The first scene in which you learn about Little Dickey is priceless. Yes, it's a horrible occurrence in Avery's life that I wish she never would've gone through, but the way that her friend comes to the rescue and stands by her side since then is fabulous. I was able to really connect with Avery. I found several similarities between her & I. Maybe that's one of the reasons why I liked her so much.

HOWEVER, I wanted to strangle her at once point in the novel. I won't go into detail because I don't want to mark it as a spoiler... but I have to admit, I was ready to kick her butt... Totally stupid move on her part... Well okay, that sounds harsh. Ha. Really though, she just made a rash decision that I guess I wouldn't have made. I wouldn't have gone to such an extreme had it been me in the situation. But that's why it was Avery and not me in the book. :) Anyways, honestly, it probably won't bother most readers. I'm sure there's plenty of women that would completely agree with the decision that she made. I just thought she was a little dramatic. LOL

So, overall, I really LOVED this novel and can't wait to follow up with A.M. Hargrove's other work! I definitely recommend this novel.
